・pdhR deletion boosted glucose metabolism under oxygen-limited culture conditions.
・pdhR deletion enables energy-saving bioprocesses under less aeration in E. coli.
・PdhR appears to contribute to maintaining redox balance.

Highlights

・Freeze-thaw process reduced the sludge volume index from 16.4 to 4.0 mL/g.
・The freeze-thaw process enhanced acidogenic activity about 20%.
・Some acidogens were enriched in the solid fraction of the frozen-thawed sludge.
・The freeze-thaw process leveled down the abundance of some acetogens.
・No evidence for direct inhibition of methanogens due to the process was found.
